Being Los Angeles

A community engagement initiative celebrating L.A. history, heritage, and communities.

The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County are proud to be a part of a vibrant and diverse community of Angelenos, who are coming together to educate, reflect, and celebrate how L.A. residents have helped shape Los Angeles. With our archives and collections, we look back at the lives and feats of the Angelenos who came before us. With our exhibitions, programs, and partnerships, we make connections between the past and present, weaving together history with stories from people who call L.A. home today.
Here you'll find highlights from our collections that speak to the natural and cultural heritage of L.A. You'll also find ways to celebrate your own story, both with us and with our partner institutions and organizations throughout Los Angeles County.

Upcoming Events in the Community

The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) have announced that our Natural History Museum (NHM), La Brea Tar Pits Museum, and William S. Hart Museum will be temporarily closed to the public until further notice.

All scheduled events and programs through Friday, April 10 will be cancelled or postponed.  See NHMLAC's response to coronavirus (COVID-19)

NHM Celebrates Women's History Month

In celebration of Women's History Month, and recognizing the vibrant community of Angelenos that work at the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County, we are highlighting individual stories of Museum staff.

Meet Ilana Gustafson, Manager of Performing Arts, as she shares the story of her journey to NHM and how performing arts has brought light to the natural and cultural worlds we study at the Museum.

Meet Molly Porter, Director of Education as she shares the story of her journey to NHM and how her art background coalescences with the Museum's focus on nature and culture to bring interdisciplinary programs to students, teachers, and parents.

We are also highlighting women who broadcasted their voices to fight for a liveable city in our Stories from Los Angeles weekend tours hosted in the Becoming Los Angeles exhibition. Check out tour dates and times below and join us as we learn how women have fought for agency in Los Angeles throughout the city’s development, becoming icons of cultural history.
